Holocaust Memorial Day takes place internationally on 27 January each year, to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi Persecution and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
27 January marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
This year’s national commemoration theme is ‘Be the Light in the Darkness’, which encourages us to reflect on how we can play our individual part in combatting the prejudice and hate that may surround us.
Virtual invitation from the Lord Mayor of Norwich
The Lord Mayor of Norwich, Councillor Vaughan Thomas, invites us to view a recording of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day Service on Wednesday 27 January 2021.
This year the virtual event will feature a number of presentations and case studies, including powerful testimonies from survivors of religious genocide.
You can view this event on YouTube via the following link, which will go live at 2pm on Wednesday 27 January: https://youtu.be/ZSTQATUlH6g
There is an opportunity within the virtual service for you to light a candle in remembrance, if you wish to do so.
Since 2005, Holocaust Memorial Day has been supported by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, a charity set up and funded by the UK Government. For more information visit: https://www.hmd.org.uk/
