Branch Meeting Update – May 2018

May’s Branch Meeting was held at the Canary Social Club on 8 May 2018 with 51 members attending.

The usual formalities were observed with a minute’s silence for those that have crossed the bar, followed by reports from:

The Vice-Chairman presented S/M’s Kevin Brett, Greg Emmott, Steve and Chris Phillips with their ID Card and RNA Badge.

The Chairman offered his apologies for not attending the meeting as he was on holiday. In his absence the Vice-Chairman read out his report starting by thanking everyone who attended Jean Hogben’s funeral, at the Chairmans count there were 26 in attendance, but there may have been a few more. He is aware that Fred was very appreciative; the poem that he read during the service was very moving.

In addition, the Vice-Chairman reported that S/M Fred Hogben had put two bottles of rum and a bottle of sherry behind the bar and hoped that Shipmates would raise a toast to Jean, which was held after stand easy.

The Chairman hoped that those who attended the Sim-Fly and Distillery experience enjoyed themselves. From the feedback he has received so far it would appear to have been a good experience. Perhaps further visits can be made in the future for those who missed out first time.

If you know of any other organisation who may be interested, please let the Chairman know and he will see what can be arranged.

The next major event for the Branch is the Armed Forces Day event at Costessey Playing Field in Longwater Lane on the 27th May. It is hoped that we will have a good Branch turnout, not just for the day but also for the parade in the late afternoon and the Chairman would like to see as many members as possible on parade as this is another opportunity for the RNA to ‘show then flag’. It is by being at events such as these that we advertise our presents in the City and encourage more recruiting.

RNA Beccles Branch have organised a visit to The Green Dragon Free House, Bungay at midday on Saturday 23rd June 2018; cost is £15. If anyone is interested in attending, then please let me know and I will pass you the details.

Membership Secretary

Reported that he had received one email, stating that a S/M wished for his membership to lapse. In addition, with the 30 April deadline having passed, we have lost 6 other members and current membership now stands at 91.

Welfare Secretary

Reminded people that at the last meeting he spoke of bringing shipmates back on board, drawing on our core values of Loyalty and Comradeship; ensuring all members have the opportunity to be involved with branch meetings and social events. It was really pleasing to see that on the same evening that this notion was introduced three shipmates stepped forward to volunteer to make calls to Shipmates.

This was a great start and once he has spoken with S/M Reg McGuire he will start the match making process to enable volunteers to make calls and whenever possible arrange a visit to see those who have limited mobility. S/M Phil thanked all those volunteers for their support and reminded all SM’s that if they are available to call a shipmate, they should let him know, it would be very much appreciated.

The Welfare Officer finished by informing all branch members of the Veterans Welfare Service – who offer help and advice about War disablement pensions, Armed Forces Compensation Scheme, Armed Forces Pension Scheme, Welfare Issues, State Benefits and ex-Service charities. Up to date contact details for the Veterans Welfare Service are 0808 1914 218 or visit for further information.

There are also a number of associations who can provide support and they are all listed on the Confederation of British Service Organisations (COBSEO) at
