January’s Branch Meeting was held at the Canary Social Club on 9 January 2018 with 42 members attending.
The usual formalities were observed with a minute’s silence for those that have crossed the bar, followed by reports from:
The Chairman commenced by taking the opportunity to thank all those who worked so hard to make our Christmas event such a success. It was a pity that we didn’t get the numbers we expected but the bad weather and the number of Shipmates that were on the sick list didn’t help. It was good to see Peter Cook there though. The catering side was very good, and the Christmas quiz and the raffle were both very successful.
The Committee have already had discussions about this year’s Christmas event, and S/M Nev Townsend will elaborate on that.
Only four of us attended the ‘run-a-shore’ last Saturday at the Beehive in Leopold Road. An excellent opportunity to put the world to rights and do a bit of lamp swinging but the point is, it is a social occasion for the benefit of all and it would be nice to see a few more members in attendance. Gus does a brilliant job of recce’ing the pubs beforehand, so we need to show him that we appreciate his efforts if nothing else!
Finally, a reminder that Ron Davis’s funeral is at Earlham Crematorium this coming Thursday at 1415. We would like as many as possible to attend please, there is a church service following the funeral but our Standard Bearer, John Kett, will be at Earlham.

The list of current officers and nomination forms will be handed out at the February Branch Meeting, and as previously mentioned at the November Meeting, there will be Committee positions that need filling, namely that of the Membership Secretary. This is a co-opted position on the Committee and if any Shipmates are interested in being considered for this position, then please let me know.
Finally the Sea Cadet Report and S/M Mike Massen reports that he is pleased to announce that the Unit were awarded a burgee for 2017; a great achievement by all.
The Unit have got their junior girls football team representing the district at area this weekend, so good luck to them, we have also had some promotions within our Marine cadet section.
The move of the Unit should hopefully happen this year and all efforts are packing up and sorting through the ship in preparation for this to go as smoothly as possible, we may put a call out to shipmates for help in achieving this, it will be a difficult task.
We are recruiting again this year for cadets, staff and most of all for committee members so if anyone is interested please contact Mike or the Unit in the first instance.
Apart from the move, the Unit has a very full calendar again this year for the cadets to partake in and get even more experiences, again we may need your support this year in certain events, like wise if there is anything we can do for you in return please contact Mike in the first instance, so it can be added to the Unit calendar.
Requested that all subscriptions for 2018 be paid as soon as possible.
