A letter has been sent out hard-copy to all branches regarding the process for registering interest for an iPad, or to volunteer in the distribution and training of those receiving them. I hope you saw that we sent 5 sign-up forms. The application process for volunteers and candidates for the iPad project are now online. There are 3 terms we use which are ‘volunteer’, ‘sponsor’ and ‘candidate’ (sometimes referred to as end user!). Volunteers are those that would like to help the identified candidates through getting the iPad and custom training and future support. Volunteers will be offered a training iPad for them to support the candidates, and the training to go with it. Sponsors are those who wish to assist in a more reduced capacity by identifying suitable candidates in their branch or area and assisting the candidate’s online or written application. There will be no expectation that a Sponsor (unless signed up to be a volunteer) will attend specific training or be issued a training iPad. Last but certainly not least we have the ‘candidates’ those who qualify for the project and who are willing recipients.
There have been many questions regarding the eligibility of candidates over the last few weeks. In short candidates:
- Should not currently be on-line themselves. They may have a family member who does email for them or other service – this does not preclude them getting their own iPad.
- Must be 65 or over.
- Have served in the RN/RM/Reserves/WRNS/QARNNS/RNXS etc. A full RNA member qualifies. No requirement regarding length of service, reason for discharge, pension etc. A naval veteran not in the RNA qualifies and could be sponsored by their local RNA branch.
The IPads will be fully ready to go when issued and will come with their own RNA protective cover; they remain the property of the RNA but on PLR. We are addressing the issue of broadband provision and volunteers will be briefed during training. Whilst the Aged Veterans’ Fund does not apply to Associate Members it has been agreed that Branch Secretaries or Treasurers who are AM, may apply in their branch role. This is so that the full benefits of going on line may be passed as much as possible to Full members who are not on line. Potential volunteers please complete the application process online before 1 Sep. This will allow the Project Manager and Albion (the iPad providers), to create a training plan depending on locations, numbers and need. Any questions please ring Central Office and we will do our best to sort it out.
